1
Q

How could one prove the existence of ions?

A

By the electrolysis of copper chloride: (view diagram of experiment) in brief: a power pack is connected to two electrons, each in separate, joining tubes of a glass U-tube containing copper chloride solution. It has been observed that chlorine collects at the positive electrode (anode) as chlorine gas and that copper collects at the negative electrode (cathode). From this, one can infer that substances that can conduct electricity when they are dissolves in water or molten must be made up of positive and negative particles (ions).

2
Q

What is a positively charged electrode called?

A

Anode

3
Q

What is a negatively charged electrode called?

A

Cathode

4
Q

In what form are atoms from Group VIII found in nature?

A

The atoms from the noble gases exist as separate atoms.

5
Q

What is a diatomic molecule?

A

A molecule made up of two atoms.

6
Q

What is bonding?

A

Bonding involves an interaction between the outside electrons from different atoms

7
Q

When are atoms stable?

A

When their outer electron shell is either full or empty.

8
Q

Why do atoms bond?

A

Atoms bond together to form molecules with the aim of increasing their stability by changing their electron arrangement until it is the same as that one of the noble gases (outer electron shell: full). This process is called obtaining a noble gas configuration.
