A

Benign tumor of bone arising from surface of facial bones

Gardner syndrome

What is a Osteoid Osteoma?

on who is it seen?

where does it arise?

A

Benign tumor of osteoblasts (that produce osteoid) surrounded by a rim of reactive bone

young adults 25 y/o or more

in the cortex of long bones

how does a osteoid osteoma present like?

if imaging is done, what do you see?

what can look like oseoid osteoma? what’s the difference?

A

bone pain that resolves with aspirin

bony mass (< 2 cm) with a radiolucent core (osteoid).

osteoblastoma but it is larger than 2 cm and arises in vertebrae and does not respond to aspirin

what is osteosarcoma?

on who is it seen?

what are the risk factors?

where does it arise in?

A

Malignant proliferation of osteoblasts

mostly in teenagers

familial retinoblastoma, Paget’s disease, radiation exposure

metaphysis of long bones (distal femur or proximal tibia)

how does osteosarcoma present?

if imaging is done, what do you see?

what would a bipsy reveal?

A

pathologic fracture or bone pain with swelling

destructive mass with a ‘sunburst ‘ appearance and lifting of the periosteum (codman triangle)

pleomorphic cells that produce osteoid
