Flashcards in Bones & joints Deck (12):
1

What are the 3 classifications/structures of joints?

Fibrous (structural), synovial, cartilaginous

2

Fibrous joints:

Synarthroses--> immovable joints
EX: sutures

3

Cartilaginous joints:

Amphiarthrosis --> (amphi= both) both slightly movable and immovable joints
EX: pubic symphysis (immovable) and intervertebral joints (slightly movable)

4

Synovial joints:

Diarthrosis --> freely movable

5

Synovial joint type: plane joint

AKA: gliding joints
EX: carpals
-nonaxial

6

Synovial joint type: hinge joint

EX: proximal articulation with humerus and ulna.. inter phalangeal joints (fingers and toes)
-uniaxial

7

Synovial joint type: pivot joint

EX: joint between atlas and axis.. proximal articulation of radius and ulna
-uniaxial

8

Synovial joint type: condyloid joint

EX: radius/ulna/carpals and Knuckles
-biaxial

9

Synovial joint type: saddle joint

EX: Carpal articulation with metacarpal 1
-biaxial

10

Synovial joint type: ball and socket joint

EX: where humerus and scapula articulate
-multiaxial

11

Synovial joint features

-synovial fluid is found in the joint cavity
-every synovial joint has hyaline cartilage in ends of bones
-ligaments reinforce joints
-Joint surfaces are enclosed by a fibrous articular capsule
-joint cavities filled with synovial fluid
-Bursae: flattened fibrous sacks lined with synovial fluid
