1
Q

What are the 3 classifications/structures of joints?

A

Fibrous (structural), synovial, cartilaginous

2
Q

Fibrous joints:

A

Synarthroses–> immovable joints

EX: sutures

3
Q

Cartilaginous joints:

A

Amphiarthrosis –> (amphi= both) both slightly movable and immovable joints
EX: pubic symphysis (immovable) and intervertebral joints (slightly movable)

4
Q

Synovial joints:

A

Diarthrosis –> freely movable

5
Q

Synovial joint type: plane joint

A

AKA: gliding joints
EX: carpals
-nonaxial

6
Q

Synovial joint type: hinge joint

A

EX: proximal articulation with humerus and ulna.. inter phalangeal joints (fingers and toes)
-uniaxial

7
Q

Synovial joint type: pivot joint

A

EX: joint between atlas and axis.. proximal articulation of radius and ulna
-uniaxial

8
Q

Synovial joint type: condyloid joint

A

EX: radius/ulna/carpals and Knuckles

-biaxial

9
Q

Synovial joint type: saddle joint

A

EX: Carpal articulation with metacarpal 1

-biaxial

10
Q

Synovial joint type: ball and socket joint

A

EX: where humerus and scapula articulate

-multiaxial

11
Q

Synovial joint features

A
  • synovial fluid is found in the joint cavity
  • every synovial joint has hyaline cartilage in ends of bones
  • ligaments reinforce joints
  • Joint surfaces are enclosed by a fibrous articular capsule
  • joint cavities filled with synovial fluid
  • Bursae: flattened fibrous sacks lined with synovial fluid
12
Q

Syndesmosis

A

In open space between ulna and radius
