Bottom-up approach (Forensics) Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the bottom-up approach driven by?
Data
What is it a result of?
Deeper and more rigorous scrutiny of the details of the offence
What is it grounded in?
Psychological theory
What is investigative psychology?
Using statistical procedures alongside psychological theory on analysis of crime scene evidence.
What does investigative psychology aim to do?
To establish patterns of behaviour that are likely to occur or co-exist across crime scenes.
What does investigative psychology help to do?
Helps to develop a statistical ‘database’ which then acts as a baseline for comparison
Interpersonal coherence
How the offender behaves at the scene may reflect their everyday behaviour
Forensic awareness
People who have been the subject of interrogation before may be mindful of how they are ‘covering their tracks’
What is geographical profiling and how is it used?
Information to do with the location of linked crime scenes are used to make inferences about the likely home or base of an offender.
What does geographical profiling assume?
That serial offenders will restrict their ‘work’ to geographical areas that they are familiar with
What are two models of offender behaviour?
Marauder and commuter
Who proposed the two models of offender behaviour?
Canter
Marauder
Commits crime around residence
Commuter
Travels away from usual residence
