  • workers from Jarrow in the northeast marched to London in 1936 to protest the poverty and deprivation suffered under the depression
  • they occurred all over Britain during the 1930s and were known as the “hunger marches”

Wilsons government 1974-76

A
  • Wilson immed end miners strike by agreeing to all demands
  • be develop social contract where in exchange of unions not claiming excessive wages increase the gov would offer subsides
  • repealed the industrial relations act which has angered the unions
  • has to ask for a loan from the IMF to cover Britain’s debts in 1976

Why does Callaghan only survive 1 term in office

  • clashes with Tony Benn at cannot meet. Which damages pub image
  • Benn becomes marginalised due to his radicalism
  • the winter of discontent 1978-79 damages Callaghan reputation and he loses the 1979 election to Margaret Thatcher
