Flashcards in C6 Deck (10):
1

Recall the typical properties of alkali metals

Soft and low density

2

Describe the reactions of lithium sodium and potassium with water

Vigourous
Produce hydrogen gas and metal hydroxides (salts that dissolve in water to produce alkaline solutions)
Lower down in the group equals more violent reaction

3

What is the pattern in reactivity of the alkali metals?

As you move down group 1 they get more reactive

4

ALKALI metals are group ...

1

5

Explain the reactivity of alkali metals in terms of electronic configurations

As you move down the group each element gains a shell. This increases the distance between the positive nucleus and the negative electrons making the strength of attraction weaker. This makes the element more reactive as the electrons will be lost more readily

6

Recall the colours for the chemical test for chlorine

Blue litmus paper turns red

Damp starch iodide paper turns bluey black

7

Describe the physical properties of chlorine bromine and iodine

Chlorine - fairly reactive, poisonous, dense, green gas

Bromine – dense, poisonous, red – brown volatile liquid

Iodine - dark grey crystalline solid or a purple vapour

8

Chloride ions test

1.add a few drops of nitric acid
2.add a few drops of silver nitrate solution
3.then record the colour change

9

Explain how halogens form ionic bonds

Halogens react typically with group 1 elements to achieve a full outer shell

E.g. sodium chloride

10

Halogens form _______ halides which dissolves in water to form ______ solutions

Hydrogen
Acidic
