1
Q

What is the name of the process in which the heart is separated?

A

Septation

2
Q

Where do the endocardial cushions form?

Extra point - what is their purpose?

A

In the atrioventricular canal. They join to separate left and right.

3
Q

What does the septum primum do?

A

Grows towards the endocardial cushions.

4
Q

What are the names of the openings in the septum primum?

A

Ostium primum before the septum primum fuses.

Ostium secundum appears as the ostium primum fuses.

5
Q

What is the name of the second septum that forms in atrial septation?

A

Septum secundum.

6
Q

What is the name of the hole in the septum secundum?

A

Foramen ovale.

7
Q

The ostium secundum and foramen ovale do not line up, so how does blood flow through them?

A

The pressure is higher on the right so this allows the blood to flow through the holes.

8
Q

What are the components of the ventricular septum?

Extra point - what is the relative quantities of them in its formation?

A

Muscular and membranous.
Muscular - most of it.
Membranous - connective tissue to fill the gap.

9
Q

What is the name of the small gap left between the ventricular septum and endocardial tissue?

A

Primary interventricular foramen.

It is fused by the membranous ventricular septum which is made of connective tissue.

10
Q

What is used for septation of the outflow tract?

A

The conotruncal septum

11
Q

Where do endocardial cushions appear in septation of the outflow tract and what is special about their formation?

A

In the Truncus arteriosus. They grow towards and twist around one another

12
Q

What causes the for ament ovale and dictus arteriosus to close?

A

First breath by the baby which increases the pressure in the left atrium.

13
Q

What causes the ductus venosus to close?

A

Placental support is removed.

14
Q

What is the fate of the foramen ovale after birth?

A

It is the fossa ovalis (thumb print in right atrium wall)

15
Q

What is the fate of the ductus arteriosus after birth?

A

It becomes the ligamentum arteriosum.

16
Q

What is the fate of the ductus venosus after birth?

A

It becomes the ligamentum venosum.

17
Q

What is the fate of the umbilical vein after birth?

A

It becomes the Ligamentum Teres.
