Flashcards in cartilage histo Deck (16):
1

a special form of CT – rigid matrix
made up of cells & matrix
with collagen and elastic fibers in matrix
with perichondrium – dense fibrous CT
avascular
functions – provide structural support & flexibility

cartilage

2

classification of cartilage based on the kind & abundance of fibers

1. Hyaline cartilage
2. Elastic cartilage
3. Fibrous cartilage

3

most common type
in embryo – skeletal model for bones
in adults – for structural support

hyaline cartilage

4

hyaline
3 subtypes:

Adult hyaline
Articular hyaline
Fetal hyaline

5

location of adult hyaline

– resp. system

6

surrounded by perichondrium
found in matrix – chondrocytes in lacunae
cell nest / isogenous group in single lacunae
matrix appears homogenous
interterritorial matrix & territorial / capsular matrix
collagen fibers abundant in intercapsular matrix

adult hyaline cartilage

7

no perichondrium in articulating surfaces
more & bigger chondrocytes
matrix
avascular

articular hyaline cartilage

8

location of fetal hyaline

skeletal system of embryo exc. face & skull

9

w/ young chondroblasts; numerous, small, irreg. arranged
no cell families
matrix being formed
avascular
with perichondrium

fetal hyaline cartilage

10

functions of fetal hyaline cartilage

Functions:
framework for endochondral ossification
represents early stage in the dev. of all types of cartilage

11

w/ elastic fiber in matrix – more flexible
w/ perichondrium
fewer cell families
avascular
fatty degeneration
modification of adult HC

elastic cartilage

12

location of elastic cartilage

eustachian tube, epiglottis, etc

13

location of location of fibrocartilage

– intervertebral disc, tendons to bones

14

Types of cartilage Growth

Interstitial / Endogenous growth
Appositional / Exogenous growth

15

type of growth
takes place in the middle portion of the cartilage
mutiplication of chondrocytes & prod. of new matrix fr. within
inc. in size & length of cartilage by hyperplasia
can occur if the cartilage is soft & yielding

Interstitial / Endogenous growth

16

type of growth
takes place in the chondrogenic layer of the perichondrium
chondroblasts diffferentiate into chondrocytes
new cells & matrix are added into the surface
inc. in width (hypertrophy)
starts later but continuous throughout life
can only occur in mature cartilage

Appositional / Exogenous growth
