Q

Explain how irrigation causes salinization

A

Water used usually has salt in it. As the water stays on the surface, it is quickly evaporated. remaining slat dehydrates the plants.
Irrigation also increases the water level. This brings existing salts from the ground to the surface. etc

Q

Explain why the Aral Sea is drying up.

A

The water that is flowing into the sea is redirected into agriculture, Additional irrigation -> salinization makes the water even less usable by organisms.

Q

What did the drying out in the sea result in?

A

The number of fish and therefore birds declines. Biodiversity is lost. The fishing industry collapsed and there are countless numbers of unemployed people. Economy is harmed, migration out of area.

Q

What can prevent salinization?

A

Crop covers. This helps keep vegetation at a certain temperature, minimizing evaporation
