Where was the aid given to?

A

Mali and Niger - two very poor countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Why did they receive aid?

A

They have suffered from DROUGHT which has led to significant and widespread FAMINE. Life expectancy is low and infant mortality is very high. Women are repressed and this helps to perpetuate the problems.

Who gave emergency aid?

A

Oxfam, UNICEF, The United Nations and various governments. The UK government gave £3 million to help

A

Mainly from NGOs (non governmental organisations) such as Oxfam

What was the nature of the emergency aid?

A
  • Food aid for 600,000 for one month
  • Water purification tablets
  • Therapeutic food for 17,000 severely malnourished children
  • 245 cereal banks opened - give families cereals to help them survive

What was the nature of the development aid?

A
  • 300 women’s groups to promote women’s education and rights
  • Development of schools
  • Training new teachers
  • Improving farmers skills
  • Free school places for girls
  • Goat aid - giving people goats so they get milk, meat and use the dung for firewood

What were the successes of the aid for children?

A
  • life expectancy increased, infant mortality decreased
  • kids had more food, decrease in malnourishment
  • new schools -> new skills -> new jobs -> less dependant on government in later life
  • girls can go to school, ending the cycle of poverty.

What were the successes of the aid for women?

A
  • Not trapped at home and so can learn new skills to help them get jobs.
  • With more children surviving they are less likely to have more children so they can focus on their aspirations.

What were the successes of the aid for pastoral farmers?

A
  • New tools and learnt new techniques to help them farm in sub-Saharan Africa -> helped their quality of life and standard of living as they could earn more money.
