Bierzo DO Viticulture

A

Traditionally very rustic wines for locals. Alvaro Palacios and Ricardo Perez in late 1990’s demonstrated Bierzo could make high quality wine.

Northwest of Castilla. Similar to Galicia in terms of climate but as it’s further inland has warmer summers, cooler winters and lower but adequate rainfall. Mountains or hills on three sides, but open to the west for some Maritime. Some years cool and rainy others warm and dry for vintage var.

Flat plain in the middle of the DO and lower slopes of mountains have fertile silty loam. Inexpensive and high yields

Best on hillsides of 500 - 850m. Good drainage, shallow infertile soil for low vigor. Altitude cools and gives large diurnal range. Slows sugar accum, retains acid while flavor and tannin develop. Steepness and age of vines means bush is common. Sig old vines (80% over 60). Yields are low.

Bierzo DO Grapes & Vini

A

Mencia 75% of plantings. Early to mid ripening, can lose med plus / high acid and accum sugar too quickly for too high alcohol if picked late. Range of styles.

Must be 70% of reds. Alicante Bouschet is remainder (but only 2% of plantings so rarely used).

Godello and other Galician whites.

Inexpensive wine, high yields (fertile soils). Med minus body, tannin, raspberry cherry. May be carbonic or semi. Usually no oak, good quality and mid.

Slope wines; more concentrated, med plus body and tannin, higher alcohol, ripe red cherry and plum with some floral and herbal. Often matured in oak for a spicy character. But care not to overwhelm Mencia flavor. Very good to outstanding and mid to prem and Super prem.

Toro DO Viticulture

A

Located in the west of Castilla y Leon with the River Duero running through

Far inland with a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Altitude of 620m - 750m for a large diurnal range that helps maintain acidity.

Spring frosts can be a problem.

Rainfall low and irrigation not allowed from June till harvest. To manage limited water, many planted at low densities with low bunches per vine (max 2,700 vines/ha).

Bush vines majority. Sandy soils mean phylloxera not a problem and many ungrafted. 25% over 50 years and a number over 100 years.

Ribera del Duero History

A

First winery Vega Sicilia in late 19th century. And still some of the best.

9 wineries in 1982 and over 280 today.

Alejandro Fernandez Pasquera sparked the change when his wines won acclaim in the 80’s. this inspired others to make and bottle their own (vs coop).

Much investment from Catalunya and Rioja

but rapid investment and expansion could dilute quality

Range of altitude and aspects. Eastern side higher and cooler. Diff sites used for balance or complexity. and to ensure consistent yields.

Sales increased 7x from 1997 to 2016. 12% exported. Netherlands, Germany, US, UK

60% is made by local wineries, but a number of producers based in Rioja and Ribera del Duero have holdings to complement red wines.
