Flashcards in Cell Structure And Division Deck (16):
1

Name the three growth stages in the cell cycle

G1, S and G2

2

What happens in Gap phase 1 (G1)

Cell grows
New organelles and proteins are made

3

What happens in synthesis (S) during the cell cycle

Cell replicates it's DNA
Ready to divide by mitosis

4

What happens in Gap phase 2 (G2)

Cell keeps growing
Proteins needed for cell division are made

5

Where does the cell cycle start and end

At mitosis

6

Where does mitosis occur in the cell cycle

After G2

7

What is the order in which mitosis stages happens

Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase

8

What happens during interphase?

Cell carries out normal functions
But also prepares to divide
Cells DNA is unraveled and replicated (to double genetic content)
Organs replicated (so it has spare ones)
ATP content is increased

9

During the cell cycle what kind of cell division occurs? Mitosis or meiosis

Mitosis

10

Describe briefly what happens in mitosis

A parent cell divides to produce two genetically identical daughter cells

11

What is mitosis needed for?

Growth of multicellular organisms
Repair of damaged tissues

12

What happens during prophase

Chromosomes condense, getting shorter and fatter
Centrioles start moving to opposite end of cells forming spindle fibres
Nuclear envelope breaks down and chromosomes lie free in cytoplasm

13

What happens during metaphase

The chromosomes line up along the middle of the cell and become attached to the spindle by their centromere

14

What happens during anaphase

The centromeres divide, separating each pair of sister chromotids
The spindles contract pulling the chromotids to opposite poles of the spindle
(The centromeres are pulled first, making the chromotids look v shaped)

15

What happens during telophase

The chromotids reach the opposite poles on the spindle.
They uncoil and become long and thin again
Nuclear envelope forms around each group of chromosomes so there is now two nuclei
Cytoplasm divides- now two daughter cells that are genetically identical

16

When does the cell cycle start

When a cell has been produced by cell division
