Q

dentify two rules of scientific drawing that the student has broken.

A

Rules the student has broken include (two needed, 1 mark each):

Draw a sample of cells only

Don’t shade

Include total magnification

Q

Explain what is meant by the term specialized cells.

A

Specialized cells are cells that have a special job to do (function).
Different types of specialized cells have different structures and organelles to help them do their particular job effectively. This makes the types look different to each other.

Q

Choose one type of specialized animal cell.

Write the name of the cell.
Describe its function in the body.
Explain how one of its structures or features helps it to do its job.

Red blood cell

A
  1. Red blood cell
  2. A red blood cell carries oxygen around the body, in the blood. Oxygen is needed by all of the cells in the body because it is used by mitochondria to release the energy stored in sugars. Cells need this energy to carry out the processes that keep them alive.
  3. Red blood cells contain a red pigment called haemoglobin, which attaches to oxygen and allows it to be moved from the lungs to another part of the body. Other features of red blood cells include their small size, their disc-like shape, their flexibility and their lack of nuclei.

Q

Explain why repeating the experiment 24 times improved the quality of the results.

A

Repeating the experiment 24 times greatly increased the number of samples tested in the investigation. This improved the quality of the results because it made it more likely that the averages for each group were closer to the true values.
