what are the cerebral hemispheres?
two almost symmetrical brain areas running from the front to the back of the brain, referred to as the left and right hemispheres
what are the similarities of the left and right hemispheres?
size, shape, structure, many of the same functions
what is hemispheric specialisation?
the idea that one hemisphere has specialised functions or has greater control over a particular function
what does damage to the left hemisphere result in?
difficulties with language related activities such as talking fluently and understanding speech
what does damage to the right hemisphere result in?
difficulties in tasks involved with visual and spatial abilities such as using a map to navigate an area
what are some specialisations of the left hemisphere?
- verbal and analytical functions
- logical reasoning
- breaking down a task
- speaking, reading, writing
what are some specialisations of the right hemisphere?
- non-verbal functions
- spatial and visual thinking
- creative thinking
- recognising emotions
which side of the body does the left hemisphere control?
right side
which side of the body does the right hemisphere control?
left side
