4

Echinococcus granulosus

*Host: Dogs
*Location of adult: Small intestine
*Common name:
Unilocular hydatid tapeworm
*Can be diagnosed by:
- Finding characteristic gravid tapeworm proglottids filled with hexacanth embryos
- The unilocular hydatid cyst consists of a large, spherical, fluid-filled vesicle or cyst enclosed by a thick, fibrous cyst wall of host origin

5

Mesocestoides spp.

*Host: Dogs, cats
*Location of adult: Small intestine
*Common name:
Tetrathyridium tapeworm

6

Spirometra spp.

*Host: Dogs, cats
*Location of adult: Small intestine
*Common name:
Zipper tapeworm (Pseudotapeworm)
*Egg type:
Operculated egg hatches upon ctc w/water releasing a motile, ciliated hexacanth embryo stage, the coracidium

7

Diphyllobothrium latum

*Host: Dogs, cats, humans (zoonotic!)
*Location of adult: Small intestine
*Common name:
Broad fish tapeworm

Bovine tapeworm (...benedini)
Ruminant tapeworm (...expansa)

9

Thysanomsoma actinoides

*Host: Cattle, sheep, goats
*Location of adult: Lumen of bile duct, pancreatic duct and small intestine
*Common name:
Fringed tapeworm of sheep and goats

10

Taenia spp. (...saginata, ...solium)

Horses
*Location of adult:
Small, large intestine and cecum (...perfoliata)
Stomach, small intestine (...magna)
*Common name:
Lappeted equine tapeworm (...perfoliata)
Equine tapeworm with large scolex (...magna)

Lappeted = round protubences

13

Paranoplocephala mamillana

*Host:
Horses
*Location of adult:
Stomach, small intestine
*Common name:
Equine tapeworm

14

Acetabula (suckers) of cestodes

Used to hold onto lining of small intestine

15

Rostellum of cestodes

Anchorlike organelle (backward facing hooks)

16

Armed vs. unarmed tapeworm

Armed: Has a rostellum
Unarmed: Lacks a rostellum

17

Proglottids of cestodes

Identical compartments or body segments

18

Immature vs. Mature vs. Gravid proglottids

Immature: youngest or closest to the head
Mature: intermediate or middle segment
Gravid: oldest or farthest from the head

19

Hexacanth

Larval stage with six hooks found in gravid proglottids

20

Cestodes egg types

4 egg types (listed in order of importance):
- Dipylidium type
- Taenia type
- Pyriform apparatus type
- Pseudophyllidean type

21

Pseudophyllidian egg

Tapeworm egg type with an operculum at one end and an oval shape (each hexacanth contains 6 hooks).

22

Drug used to treat tapeworms

Praziquantel (e.g. D. caninum)
Fenbendazole (e.g. Taenia spp.)
Epsiprantel
Flea control (all pets in household)

23

Cestodes can be transmitted by ...

Fleas (85% of the time it's fleas)
Mites

24

Cestodes

Adult tapeworms
- parasitize a wide variety of domesticated and wild animals
- often associated with parasites of the intestinal tract

25

Metacestodes

Larval stages of tapeworms
- found in an extraintestinal site within the intermediate host
- several types of metacestode stages are known: cysticercoid, cysticercus, coenurus, hydatid cyst, and sparganum

26

Cysticercoid

Infective stage of Dipylidium caninum

27

Hexacanth embryos

- usually produced by Taeniid-type tapeworms (Taenia, Multiceps, and Echinococcus spp.)
- striated eggshell, called an embryophore
- contains an embryo with six tiny teeth on the inside (hence the six-toothed or hexacanth embryo)
