Flashcards in ch 10 Deck (12):
1

Endocrine System

consists of a number of glands located throughout the body that produce and secrete hormones

2

Hormone

peptides used to create amino acids
steroids (rings of carbon and hydrogen atoms)
influences or controls specific tissue or organ

3

Target Organ

what hormones are targeted to

4

Exocrine glands

secrete products into ducts
transport to destination

5

Endocrine Glands

ductless glands
secrete hormones directly into blood

6

Hypothalamus

located beneath lower walls and floor of the third ventricle of the brain
regulate internal environment

7

Pituitary Gland

has two separate parts
posterior pituitary
anterior pituitary

8

Anterior Pituitary(exocrine system)

Physiological processes:
stress, growth, reproduction and lactation
Can measure hormone levels

9

Hormones secreted by anterior pituitary

ACTH, GH, TSH, LH

10

Posterior Pituitary(endocrine system)

Site for the secretion of neurohypophyseal hormones (oxytocin and vasopressin) directly into the blood
Collection of axonal projections from the hypothalamus
not glandular

11

Vasopressin Hormone

promotes reabsorbtion of water from kidneys
prevents dehydration

12

Diabetes Insipidus

produces lots of urine
reluctant loss of electrolytes from blood
