what other factors influence school performance
-social class
-ethnic differences
-gender differences

In what ways does SES impact ability to do well in school
-IQ
-Nutrition
-healthcare
-school quality (lower in poorer areas; vicious cycle)

-parenting style and involvement
ethnic differences in school performance
-highest performance in Asian Americans because of cultural importance on education
-lower performance in latino and African Americans because of discrimination and prejudice
Why LA are lower in performance than AA
both experience discrimination, but AA families have more open discussions about it and emphasis more cultural pride
immigrant paradox
after first arriving, immigrants do very well academically but the next generations become less successful which may seem to not make sense considering that English would not be a barrier anymore BUT because of discrimination faced and assimilation into culture the future generations perform worse
gender differences
-girls do better than boys in both classroom grades and in graduation rates because they have better relationships that lead them to enjoy school more and also they do more homework
two kinds of exceptionalities
gifted and disabilities
giftedness
defined by IQ but also characteristics of:
-precocity (evident at early age)
-independence (need less instruction/support)
-drive for mastery (able to focus in order to master)
-excellence in information processing (pick up things very quickly)
learning disabilities
normal intelligence but difficulty in one or more academic areas
-more diagnosed in boys and in blacks
-effective interventions start young
ADHD
psychological disorder that effects attention and hyperactivity
-more diagnosed in boys and whites
