Circiadian Cycle

  • 2hr cycle
  • follows day/night
  • body temperature
  • Body temperature goes up, peaks mid day, dips in the afternoon and drops at night

Sleep Cycle

  • 90 minute cycle

5 Stages of Sleep

  • Prestage - not real stage
    • move from beta to alpha waves
  1. Stage 1 - very light
    1. can wake up easily
    2. 5 min
    3. alpha to theta waves
    4. have hallucinations of last things you just said/smelt/heard
    5. (hypnotic sleep)
  2. Stage 2 - theta waves with sleep spindles
    1. 20 min
  3. Stage 3 - 20 min
    1. move from theta to delta waves
  4. Stage 4 - 30 min
    1. deep sleep, chemicals restored
    2. hard to wake

    4. night terrors, sleep walking, bed wetting

Seasonal Affective Disorder

(S.A.D.)

  • Circiadian Cycle is out of sync
  • lack of sunlight when you wake up - lack of energy
  • light therapy - a light that puts out the same rays as sun
    • tricks body into thinking the sun is up

  • Occurs in 2nd stage of sleep
  • helps you wake up if you need to, if you don't then you go into a deeper sleep
