Flashcards in Ch. 7 Sec. 3/4 Vocab Deck (20):
1

Cell wall

A strong supporting layer around the cell membrane

In plants, algae, fungus, and bacteria

Protects the cell and maintains shape

2

Lipid bilayer

A double-layered sheet that composes nearly all cell membranes

2 flexible layers within protein channels

3

Concentration

The mass of solute in a given volume of solution

4

Diffusion

When particles of a solution spread out from an area where they are more concentrated to an area where they are less concentrated

5

Equilibrium

When the concentration of a solute is the same throughout a system

6

Osmosis

The diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane

7

Isotonic

When the concentration of water and sugar will be the same on both sides of the membrane

8

Hypertonic

When the solution is more concentrated

9

Hypotonic

When the solution is less concentrated

10

Facilitated diffusion

The passive transportation of molecules or ions across a biological membrane

11

Active transport

When cells move materials against a concentration gradient

12

Endocytosis

The process of taking materials into a cell by means of findings of the cell membrane

13

Phagocytosis

When cytoplasm surrounds a particle and packages it within a food vacuole so a cell can engulf it and an amoeba can take in food

14

Pinocytosis

When cells take up liquid from the surrounding environment and pockets form around the cell membrane, fill with liquid, and pinch off to form vacuoles within the cell.

15

Exocytosis

When the membrane of the vacuole surrounding the material fuses with the cell membrane, forcing the contents out of the cell.

16

Cell specialization

When cells throughout an organism can develop in different ways to perform different tasks

17

Tissue

When similar cells are grouped into units, they form tissue

18

Organ

When groups of tissue work together, they form an organ

19

Organ system

A group of organs that work together to perform a specific function

20

Cell membrane

Thin, flexible barrier supporting the cell

Phospholipid bilayer

Regulates materials in and out of cell

Carbs lipids proteins

Semipermeable
