Flashcards in Ch8 Quiz Deck (12):
1

Who is credited on the discovery of the structure of DNA

Francis Crick and James Watson, with the help of Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins

2

What is DNA made of?

Two strands of nucleotides. Each nucleotide has a sugar, a phosphate, and a nitrogen base.

3

Purines

2 rings. Guanine and adenine

4

Pyrimidines

1 ring. Cytosine and Thymine

5

What are the backbones and rungs of DNA made of?

Backbone: deoxyribose and phosphate. Rungs: Hydrogen bonds and base pairs.

6

Base Pairs

A and T, G and C

7

Replication of DNA process

1. DNA is separated by helicase (Helicase splits DNA).
2. The DNA strands are held apart (site where stands split is called the replication fork).
3. DNA Polymerase adds the complementary nucleotides to the strands

8

DNA polymerase

Acts as a "spellchecker", goes back and finds mistakes and fixes them.

9

TACCGGC
ATCGCCG <-- what is this an example of?

Complementary DNA

10

How many bonds between cytosine and guanine?

Three

11

How many bonds between thymine and adenine?

Two

12

What type of bond holds the DNA bases together and is it strong or weak?

Hydrogen bonds and weak.
