1

Metabolism

Sum of all the chemical reactions that take place in an organism

2

Solar energy

Energy from the sun

3

Cellular energy

Energy stored in the bonds of molecules

4

Enzyme

Proteins that speed up a reaction without being used up

5

Catalyst

A substance which alters the speed of a reaction without being consumed itself in the reaction

6

Catabolic enzyme

An enzyme that breaks down a substance into simpler molecules
Eg. Amylase breaks down starch to maltose

7

Anabolic enzyme

An enzyme that helps to join simpler molecules to make a more complex substances
Eg. DNA Polymerase joins sections of DNA together

8

Denatured enzyme

An enzyme that has lost its shape and can no longer function

9

Bio-processing

The use of enzyme controlled reactions to produce a product

10

Bioreactor

A vessel or container in which living cells or their products are used to make a product

11

Immobilised enzymes

Enzymes that are attached to each other or to an inert material

12

Advantages of immobilised enzymes

- can be reused
- production process is cheaper
- the product does not need to be separated from the enzyme

13

Uses of immobilised enzymes

- glucose isomerase converts glucose to fructose
-lactase converts lactose to galactose
