Suburbs
- more homes could be owned
- less expensive than downtown
- more cars = farther work
- 11/18 million Canadians lived there
Baby boom
- 1946-1961 Canada’s population increaded 50% from 12 to 18 million
- brought challenges:
• more schools needed
• families needed new homes (suburbs developed)
Central mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)

- based on factors such as climate, resources
- resource and industrial based provinces were most wealthiest

- Gov. Dealed regional disparity with these funds
- fed. Gov. Gives provinces funds for equality of basic services

- for ships to travel and hydro power
- us joined in last minute to gain some control
- debate over control in 1956
- liberals decided to finance with trans-Canada pipeline

- carried natural gas from alberta to ON, Quebec, US
- the company had more americans than canadians, debate over why gov. loaning so much money then
- C. D. Howe went alone anyways, which ruined St. laurent Gov. And diefenbaker won 1957 election.
American investment debate
- American economy booming in post-war years, Canada had resources
- together their trade relationship grew

- gov. Help (eg. Health care) for citizens (disabled, elderly, unemployed)
- paid through taxes

- fought were rights, their culture was being stripped
- changed indian act, gained more control such as voting
Women’s Liberation Movement - 1960
- women were paid less than men
- had little say in politics
- protested for rights in ed. Work, etc.
