What is the function of the prefix?
Adds extra information about the base. Often how, where or to what degree.
Where is the prefix located in a word?
The beginning

They are not essential, and they hardly ever have more than one.
What is the function of the Base?
Carries basic meaning - a modified noun, adjective, or verb with a bit missing
Where is the base located in a word?
Middle
Are Bases essential? Can a word have more than one?
Yes, and you often have more than one
What is the function of the suffix?
completes the sense of the base - in combination with the base forms a noun, adjective or verb
Where is the suffix located in a word?
the end
Are Suffixes essential? Can a word have more than one?
Yes, and they sometimes have more than one
What is a combining Vowel?
A vowel added to the end of the base to make pronunciation easier.
Usually used when the base ends with a consonant and the suffix starts with a consonant.
What is the order to break down a word when trying to define it?
- ) Start with identifying the suffix. It will tell you whether the whole medical term is an adjective, noun or verb.
- ) If you only have a base and the suffix, look at the base next.
- ) If you have a prefix look at that before the base as it modifies the base.
