Chapter 10 non wordparts Flashcards
Ballooning of a weakened portion of an arterial wall
Aneurysm
Cardiac arrhythmia characterized by chaotic, rapid electrical impulses in the atria. (Arrhythmia - lack of regular rhythm of heart beat)
Atrial Fibrillation (Afib)
Chest pain which may radiate to the left arm and jaw, that occurs when there is an insufficient supply of blood to the heart muscle
Angina Pectroris
Inherited bleeding disorder causing reduced production of healthy blood cells and hemoglobin
Thalassemia
Sudden cessation of cardiac output and effective circulation, which requires cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Cardiac Arrest
Condition in which there is an inability of the heart to pump enough blood through the body to supply the tissues and organs with nutrients and oxygen
Heart failure (also called congestive heart failure)
narrowing of the mitral valve from scarring, usually caused by episodes of rheumatic fever
Mitral valve stenosis
Disorder of the heart caused by persistent high blood pressure
Hypertensive heart disease
Condition that reduces the flow of blood through the coronary arteries to the myocardium that may progress to depriving the heart tissue of sufficient oxygen and nutrients to function normally; most often caused by coronary atherosclerosis. Is a common cause of heart failure and myocardial infarction.
Coronary artery disease
Death (necrosis) of a portion of the myocardium caused by lack of oxygen resulting from an interrupted blood supply (also called heart attack)
Myocardial infarction
Blood clot or foreign material, such as air or fat, that enters the bloodstream and moves until it lodges at another point in the circulation
Embolus
Group of inherited red blood cell disorders (anemias) where hemoglobin is abnormally shaped and has a short life cycle.
Sickle cell disease
Inherited bleeding disorder most commonly caused by a deficiency of the coagulation factor VIII.
Hemophilia
Malignant disease characterized by excessive increase in abnormal leukocytes formed in the bone marrow.
Leukemia
Systemic inflammatory response caused by usually bacteria, entering the bloodstream and multiplying; life threatening. Overwhelming presence of pathogens in the blood is called septicemia.
Sepsis
