Flashcards in Chapter 13 vocab Deck (17):
0

Plane mirror

Flat smooth surface that reflects light to form upright virtual images

1

Virtual image

Image formed by diverging light rays that is perceived by the brain, even though the light rays are not where is image appears to be located

2

Concave mirror

Reflective surface that curves inward and can magnify objects or create real images

3

Optical axis

Imaginary straight line that is perpendicular to the surface at the center of a mirror or lens

4

Focal point

Location on the optical axis of a curved mirror or lens where light rays that are initially parallel to the optical axis converge after they strike the mirror or lens

5

Focal length

Distance from the center of a lens or mirror to the focal point

6

Real image

Image that appears at a certain location as a result of rays of light converging at that location

7

Convex mirror

Reflective surface that curves outward, away forum the viewr and forms a reduced upright virtual image

8

Convex lens

Lens that is thicker in the middle and can form real of virtual images

9

Concave lens

Lens that is thicker at the edges and causes light rays to diverge and from reduced up right virtual images often used with other lenses

10

Cornea

Transparent outer covering of the eyeball through which light enters the eye

11

Retune

Inner lining of the eyes hat has cells which convert light images into electrical signals for the brain to interpret

12

Refracting telescope

Uses lenses to gather and focus light from distant objects

13

Reflecting telescope

Uses mirrors and lenses to collect and focus light form distant objects

14

Microscope

Uses 2 convex lenses to magnify small close objects

15

Converging rays

Light rays that move closer together as they travel

16

Diverging rays

Light rays that move apart or spread out form each other as they travel
