Hematology

The branch of science concerned with blood, blood tissues, and their associated disorders

1

Induced polycythemia

Increasing RBC count; contributes to high blood pressure and stroke.

2

Anticoagulant drug

Substances that delays, suppresses, or prevents blood clotting

3

Thrombolytic agents

Chemical substances injected to dissolve blood clots

4

Streptokinase

First thrombolytic agent; introduced in 1982

5

tPA

Used to treat heart attacks and strokes caused by blood clots

6

Anemia

Condition where oxygen carrying capacity of blood is reduced

7

Hemophilia

Inherited deficiency of clotting where bleeding may occur spontaneously or after mild trauma

8

Leukemia

Bone marrow cancer in which white blood cell count multiplies uncontrollably

9

Autologous preoperative transfusion

Donating one's own blood in preparation for surgery

10

Blood bank

Facility that collects and stores blood for future use by the donor or others

11

Cyanosis

Slightly bluish/dark purple skin discoloration of the eyes, skin, and mucous membrane due to an increased quantity of reduced hemoglobin

12

Hemochromatosis

Disorder of iron metabolism that results in discoloration, cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus, and bone and joint abnormalities

13

Jaundice

Abnormal yellowish discoloration of the eyes, skin, and mucous membrane due to excess bilirubin in blood

14

Phlebotomist

A technician who specializes in withdrawing blood

15

Polycythemia

Abnormal increase in red blood cells in which hematocrit is above 55%

16

Septicemia

Accumulation of toxins or disease causing bacteria in blood (blood poisoning)

17

Thrombocytopenia

Very low platelet count that results in a tendency to bleed from capillaries
