Chapter 16- Periodic Table Flashcards
NUCLEUS
The small positively charged center of an atom, contains protons and neutrons.
Atom
The smallest particle of an element that still retains the properties of the element
PROTON
Particle in the nucleus of an atom that has 1+ charge.
Neutron
Particle in the nucleus of an atom that has no electric charge
Electron
Particle with a charge of 1- that surrounds the nucleus of an atom
Quark
Particle of matter that makes up protons and neutrons
Electron cloud
Area around the nucleus of an atom where electrons are likely to be found
Atomic number
Number of protons in an atoms nucleus
Mass number
Sum of the number of protons and neutrons in an atoms nucleus
Isotope
Atom of an element with a specific number of neutrons
Average atomic mass
Weighted average mass of an elements isotopes according to their natural abundance
Periodic table
Organized list of all known elements, arranged by increased atomic number and by changes in chemical and physical properties
Period
Horizontal row in the periodic table
Group
Vertical column in the periodic table
Electron dot diagram
Uses chemical symbols for an element and dots representing the munger of electrons in the elements outer energy level
