Chapter 2 Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are contour lines?
Join places same height above sea level.
Lines have height in metres written between or above them.
What is a contour interval?
Difference in height between two consecutive lines and must be the same all over the map.
What slopes can you get?
Gentle, steep, convex, concave, terraced, vertical.
What landforms can you get?
Conical, flat-topped, valleys, saddles, spurs, waterfalls, mountains
Give 5 characteristics of contour lines.
Never stop in the middle of the map, either circular or run off.
Only touch each other on vertical slope. (Cliff or waterfall)
V-shape pointing up: valley
V-shape pointing down: spur
Lines may never cross
How do you identify a slope?
Contour lines far apart, slope gentle, flat.
Close together: steep slope
What are conical mountains and give an example?
Oval circles with large oval shape in the centre to indicate flat top.
E.g: Omatako Hills near Otjiwarongo
What is a conical mountain?
Concentric circles with smallest circle in center to indicate sharp point.
What are valleys?
Valleys are formed when rivers flow downwards. In Namibia there are many dry river beds because of the dry climate. Two rivers that flow next to each other usually have a area of higher land between the valleys.
What are spurs?
Higher area between valleys and separate the rivers.
What should you remember when you are determining the position of something?
Latitude longitude on grid
Latitude - parallels
Longitude - meridians
360 meridians
180 parallels
Namibia’s latitude S of equators, latitude increase southwards in Nam.
Namibia’s longitude East of Greenwich, longitude increases eastwards.
What is a convex slope?
Contours far apart at top, close at bottom
What is a concave slope?
Contours close at top, far at bottom.
Terraced slope?
Pairs of contour lines close together with rather flat, less steep areas in between. #landform/slope
Vertical slope?
Contours so close, they touch:
Cliff or waterfall
