25
Utilitarianism
One that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number
26
Vocation
Call from God to all members of the church. It usually refers to a call of Religious life as a priest or nun.
27
Moral decisions
Process whether something is right or wrong How do I know if I'm doing the right thing Am I considering the interests of others and not just myself What makes one action right and another wrong
28
Moral stances
Way in which we make a moral decision
29
Two stances
Religious authority Utilitarianism
30
Religious authority
People who follow this will follow guidance from holy books,religious leaders and other sources of teaching
31
Holy books
Major source of moral guidance. Sometimes can be taken literally true
32
Religious leaders
Often speak on moral issues, giving guidance to followers of that faith eg Pope Francis
33
Advantages of Religious authority
Many sources Examples to follow eg Saints Scripture gives guidance Religious leaders give guidance
34
Disadvantages of Religious authority
``` Can be biased Can change it to meet your point Sources can clash People may not agree on moral stance Loss of individual thought Scripture outdated Not everything in bible can be taken literally ```
35
Utilitarianism
This stance believes that people should find out which stance makes the most people the happiest
36
Marriage in Modern Society
Marriage remains popular with 90% of men and woman choosing to marry Average age for men to marry: 26 " " " Women to marry: 24
37
Reasons for getting married
To commit ourselves to who we love for life To provide a secure and loving environment for bringing up children To ensure partnership and companionship through life
38
Marriage In Catholic Church
Marriage is a sacrament Exchange of vows before witnesses and God shows the level of commitment Exchange of rings blessed by God are a sign of love and fidelity
39
Marriage in Church of Scotland
Marriage is a gift to humanity It is for the security of children and social health for community Marriage is an institution It requires love, trust, forgiveness and faithfulness
40
Marriage in Judaism
Jewish marriage ceremony shows two aspects of marriage Sanctity and affirmation of love(spiritual) Arrangement between couple that ensures fairness, justice and mutual responsibility(practical) Doesn't have to take place in a synagogue and rabbi doesn't have to be present Wedding ceremony is a ritual of transformation
41
Adultery
Sexual act between a married person and someone other than their marriage partner
42
Jewish wedding ceremony
Standing under the Chuppah - Reminds us of innocence of Garden Of Eden. Couples exchange rings and vows under it Cups of wine - symbol of joy shared by family and couple Declaration and betrothal - rings exchanged. Rings made of precious metal, adorned with stones and unpierced Breaking of Glass - symbolising the smashing of previous lives
43
Catholic Church on Contraception
The use of artificial contraception is morally unacceptable by the Church. God intended man and woman to be a communion of persons through marriage and sexual intercourse Communion of persons is denied when contraception is used to prevent procreation from occurring
44
Types of contraception
This is the deliberate prevention of pregnancy. Condoms - barrier to stop sperm reaching egg The Pill - affects woman's hormone levels to prevent ovulation and pregnancy from occurring ``` Natural contraception (Natural family planning) Planning of sexual activity around woman's menstrual cycle to avoid her fertile time ```
45
what are the moral issues arising from human sexuality
even though it is a sin to the faith of christianity, it is needed to help keep a couple together, as it helps keep the relationship healthy even though it keeps a couples relationship healthy, STDs can occur and harm the relationship how far should the state legislate about how people express their sexuality
46
what are the main features of utilitarianism
a consequentialist approach so they will consider the likely outcome of a decision the principle of the greatest good for the greatest number act utilitarianism - looks at consequences of a particular act
47
what does christianity say about marriage
ordained by God when he created humans most christians see marriage as a sacred bond between man and woman that it shouldnt be broken and that it should be the background on which children should be brought up on it is a physical and spiritual bond it is a sacrament something that shouldnt be broken
48
does marriage make the world a better place
yes marriage gives people security in relationships because people are likely to take it seriously when they have made a solemn promise gives a stable background for which children can be brought up on and that parents are more likely to stay together faithfulness in marriage reduces STDs there are practical benefits in law eg in relation to things like inheritance no there are plenty of secure and loving relationships between people who are not married
49
what supports the teleological arguement
everything in the world has a purpose since there is so much complexity in the world there must be a designer for it all the eye is so complex. so many different parts to it. a powerful designer must have made it. the only powerful designer able to do this is God regularity of seasons
50
why would someone disagree with the teleological arguement
theory of evolution design can come about by chance if world needs a intelligent designer then the designer needs a designer mechanical cannot be compared to world analogies are based on assumptions and not fact so are weak
51
what are the main points of the cosmological argument
that everything has a cause there must be an uncaused cause somewhere that uncaused cause is God
52
how does the cosmological arguement prove Gods existence
universe exists, so there must be a cause for that - God if god doesnt exist then nothing can exist there must be a first cause - Aquinas said arguement contradicts itself. states itself that there are no uncaused causes, yet it says God does not need a cause arguement based on assumptions therefore proves nothing only shows that God may exist if god can be without cause, then the universe could also be without a cause as it is as powerful as God
