Chapter 2: The ships Flashcards
(60 cards)
How would you define port agency?
Looking after the needs of a ship and its personnel before, during and after calling at a port.
This is the work entrusted to an agent.
Whose interests does a port agent represent?
A port agent stands in the shoes of both the Owner and Master. This stems from the historic need for the master/owner of vessel having knowledge on land to cater to the needs of the ship which was passed on to an agent when the flet grew so the agent would act on behalf of the Owner (and Master).
By others, the agent will be seen as representing the ship. However their role is not that straigthforward. Their duties vary from port to port and country, and even ports within the same country.
