Flashcards in Chapter 22 Deck (19):
1

Ablation

The amount of ice lost, in the process of losing ice, from a glacier

2

Accumulation

The amount of snow at it, and the process of adding snow, to a glacier

3

Artesian system

A system in which confined groundwater under pressure can rise above the upper boundary of an aquifer

4

Channel geometry

The shape of a stream channel; the cross-sectional area

5

Cut bank

A steep Bank on the outside bend of the river is channel; an area of erosion

6

Delta

And accumulation of settlements, commonly forming a triangular or fan shaped plane, deposited where a stream flows into standing body of water

7

Discharge

The volume of water that passes a given location in a stream channel in a certain amount of time

8

Drift

A general term for all glacial deposits

9

Floodplain

A wide plain of almost flat land on either side of the stream channel. Submerge doing flood stage, the plane is built up by sediments discharge during the flood

10

Glacier

A large mass of ice formed by the compaction and recrystallization of snow, moving downslope under its own weight

11

Gradient

The vertical drop in the elevation of a stream channel divided by the horizontal distance for that drop; the steepness of the slope

12

Groundwater

Underground water in the saturated zone

13

Hydraulic conductivity

A measure of the ability of a porous rock or sediment to transmit fluid

14

Laminar flow

Water flowing smoothly and fairly slowly in straight lines with no mixing of sediment

15

Point bar

A Sandy gentle bank on the inside bend of the river is channel; an area of deposition

16

Porosity

The volume of open space in rock or sediment compared to the total volume of solids plus open space

17

Sand dune

A landform created when airflow is blocked by an obstacle, slowing airspeed and therefore promoting the deposition of airborne send

18

Turbulent flow

Water flowing rapidly and a radically in a jumbled manner, stirring up everything it touches

19

Water table

The upper boundary of the saturated zone below which every pore space is completely filled with water
