Flashcards in Chapter 3: Prenatal Development Deck (12):
1

Germination: Blastocyst, Embryonic Disk, Trophoblast

Blastocyst: hollow, fluid-filled ball
Embryonic Disk: cells inside blastocyst which become the new organism
Trophoblast: thin outer ring of cells on blastocyst

2

Germination: Implantation

blastocyst burrows into uterine lining

3

Germination: Amnion, Yoke Sac (part of implantation process)

Amnion: membrane that encloses organism in amniotic fluid
Yoke Sac: makes blood cells until liver, spleen, and bone marrow of developing organism takes over

4

Germination: Chorion

protective membrane that develops at end of the second week of germination period. It surrounds the amnion. Villi (blood vessels) emerge from here

5

Germination: Umbilical Cord

delivers nutrients and removes wastes

6

Fetus: Vernix

white, cheese-like substance that protects skin from chapping

7

Fetus: Lanugo

white hair that helps vernix stick to skin

8

Fetus: Age of Viability

when fetus can survive outside of womb
- 22-26 weeks

9

Teratogens

environmental agents that causes damage during the prenatal period

10

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

range of physical, mental, and behavioural outcomes caused by prenatal alcohol exposure

11

Fertilization: Zona Pellucida

covering around eggs

12

Embryonic Stage:
- Ectoderm
- Mesoderm
- Endoderm

Ectoderm: skin, nerves, nails, senses
Mesoderm: muscles, bone, circulatory system, reproductive system, excretory system
Endoderm: digestive system, respiratory system
