Chapter 5 - Contol Of Microbial growth Flashcards
What acid did Lister use to prevent the growth of gangrene in his wounded patients?
He used carbolic acid.
When was Lister Knighted?
1883 and subsequently became a baron and a member of the House of Lords.
What was British physician Joseph Lister responsible for?
Revolutionizing surgery by developing effective methods that prevent surgical wounds from becoming infected.
What are PHYSICAL METHODS used to control microorganisms?
Include heat treatment, irradiation, filtration, and mechanical removing (washing).
What are CHEMICAL METHODS used to control microorganisms?
Any variety of antimicrobial chemicals.
What is STERILIZATION?
The process of removing or destroying all microorganisms and viruses on or in a product.
What does it mean to have a STERILE item?
An item that is free of microbes, including endospores and viruses. Does not include prions.
What is disinfection?
The process that eliminates most or all pathogens on or in a material. Implies the use of antimicrobial chemicals.
What is a biocides?
Bio means “life” and cida means “kill”. Disinfectants that target microscopic organisms including bacteria and their endospores, fungi, and viruses.
Commonly called “germicides”
What does bactericidal mean?
They kill bacteria.
What are antiseptics?
Disinfectants formulated for use on the skin. Used to prepare for invasive surgeries.
What is Pasteurization?
Uses brief heat treatment to reduce the number of spoilage organisms and kill pathogens.
Foods and inanimate objects can be pasteurized.
What is Decontamination?
Is a treatment used to reduce the # of pathogens to a level considered safe to handle.
Treatment can be as simple as thoroughly washing, or it may involve the use of heat and disinfection.
What is Degerming?
Treatment used to decrease the number of microbes in an area, particularly the skin.
What does it mean to be sanitized?
Substantially reduces microbial population that meets accepted health standards.
