Network Operating System
a large, complex program that manages the resources common on most local area network
Common features of network operating system
- provide sharing computer resources
- provide a way to store and manage files in an organized manner
- provide a means of backing up and encrypting data
- provide a means of communication over the Internet by making use of the TCP/IP protocol
Network Operating System Functions
- Manage one or more network servers
- Maintain a file system of data sets, applications, user profiles, network peripherals
- Coordinate all resources and service available
- Process requests from users
- Manage one or more network printers
- Manage the interconnection between local area network
Network servers
High-power workstations often with multiple processors, RAID, SCSI, and a lots of memory and disk space.
Novell NetWare
• Was the leading local area network OS (fallen way down the list now)
• Introduced a number of very powerful concepts including:
- Hierarchical directory structure
- Netware file system
Windows NT Version 4
• Based on popular Windows OS (User Interface)
- NOT the same as Windows 98/Windows Me
• Full service multitasking OS
- Capable of supporting multiple servers
• NT systems:
- Works very well with other Microsoft products
• NT supporting large systems (Questionable)
• Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) plagues NT systems
Windows 2008
• Newest version of Windows network OS • Continue improvements: - Active Directory - New management tools • New server core - Including a virtual server • Self-healing server: - Can fix corrupted files and/or folders • Increased processing speed • Advancements in network security
Unix
• Older
- Popular multitasking OS
~ Capable of supporting network operations
• First OS:
- Written in C language
• Very stable system:
- Capable of supporting very large operations
• Numerous versions available from different vendors
• Source code:
- Readily available to everyone
• If a program needs to be modified/developing a procedure:
- Code can be simply written for the change (by the administrators)
Linux
• Based on Unix’s principles • Many versions available for: - Free - Very small price • Very stable multitasking OS - Just like Unix • Uses the most common, available programs to enhance the kernel: - GIMP - KDE - GNOME - Apache web server
Mac OS X Server
• Version X is based on Linux code
- Very stable and quite powerful
• Capable of supporting non-Apple networks as well (other than Apple networks)
Active directory server
Active Directory Domain Services (AD) is a server role in Active Directory that allows admins to manage users account.
File server
A file server is a computer attached to a network that has the primary purpose of
• providing a location for shared disk access,
- i.e. shared storage of computer files that can be accessed by the workstations that are attached to the same computer network.
Antivirus server
A server is a computer attached to a network that has the primary function to carry out real time virus scan for the computers
Web Application server
A server is a computer attached to a network that allows the user to create web applications.
Anti Virus software
It is designed to detect and remove viruses that infected the system memory, disks and operating system.
