Flashcards in Chapter 6: CPU Deck (19):
1

System unit (chasis)

The case on the desktop that contains and protect motherboard, hard drive, memory and others

2

Motherboard (system board)

main circuit board of the computer

3

Computer chip

Small piece of semiconducting material on which integrated circuit are etched

4

Processors (CPU)

interpret and carries out the basic instructions that operate a computer

5

Microprocessor

Refer to personal computer processor chip

6

Multi-core processor

A single chip with 2 or more separate processor cores

7

Control unit (CU)

The component of the processor that directs and coordinates most of the operations in the computer

8

Arithmetic Logic unit (ALU)

Component of processor
Performs arithmetic, comparison and other operations
Arithmetic operation include basic calculation (ex. +, -, x,:, <>, =)

9

Machine cycle

For every instructions, a processor repeats the set of 4 basic operations which comprise a machine cycle
(1) fetching
(2) decoding
(3) executing
(4) storing

10

(1) Fetching

The process of obtaining a program/application instruction or data item from a memory

11

(2) Decoding

The process of translating the instructions into signals the computer can execute

12

(3) Executing

The process of carrying out the commands

13

(4) Storing

Writing the result to memory (not to a storage medium)

14

Registers

A processor contains small, high-speed storage location
Temporarily hold data and instructions
Is part of processor, NOT part of memory or permanent storage device
Include a storage location from where an instruction was fetched
Storing instructions while CU decodes it
Storing data while ALU calculating it
Storing result of a calculation

15

System Clock

The processor relies on sa small quartz crystal circuit
Control timing of all computer operations

16

Tick

Set the operating pace of components of the system unit
The faster the clock speed, the more instructions the processor can execute per seconds

17

Note

Smaller mobile device often use more compact processors that consume less power, yet offer high performance

18

Cloud computing

an environment of servers that house and provide access to resources users access via the Internet

19

Why choosing cloud computing?

Accessibility, Cost savings, Space savings, Scalability (flexibility to increase and decrease computing requirment as needed)
