Homeostasis
disease where blood glucose concentration can’t be controlled properly, caused by lack of insulin

removal of waste products of metabolism from the body

regulation of salt and water balance in body

blood and tissue fluid
Tissue fluid
watery solution of salts, glucose and solutes. Surrounds all cells, is pathway for transferring nutrients between blood and cells
Renal artery
blood vessel that supplies blood to kidney
Renal vein
blood vessel that takes blood away from kidney
Ureter
tube carrying urine from kidney to bladder
Bladder
muscular bag, stores urine before its removal from body
Urethra
tube carrying urine from bladder outside
Sphincter muscle
ring of muscle in wall of an organ which holds back its contents
Cortex
outer part of kidney. Contains kidney tubules and blood vessels
Nephron
kidney tubule (functional unit of a kidney)
Medulla
middle part of kidney containing blood vessels, loops of Henlé and collecting ducts
Bowman’s capsule
structure consisting of hollow cup of cells at start of kidney tubule (site of ultrafiltration)
Pelvis
funnel-like part of kidney leading to ureter
