what is conflict?
a process that begins when one party perceives that another party has negatively affected or is about to negatively affect something that the first party cares about
what is functional conflict?
conflict that supports the goals of the group and improves performance
what is dysfunctional conflict?
conflict that hinders group performance
what are the 3 types of conflict?
task, relationship, and process conflict
what is task conflict?
conflict over the content and goals of the work
what is relationship conflict?
conflict based on interpersonal relationships
what is process conflict?
conflict over how the work gets done
what are the 3 Loci of conflict?
dyadic, intragroup, and intergroup conflict
what is dyadic conflict?
conflict that occurs between two people
what is intragroup conflict?
conflict that occurs within a group/team
what is intergroup conflict
conflict that occurs between different groups/teams
what are the sources of conflict?
communication, through semantic difficulties, misunderstandings, ‘noise’ in communication channels
how does personality impact conflict?
people high in disagreeableness, neuroticism, or self-monitoring are prone to tangle with other people more often, and to react poorly when conflict occurs
what is cooperativeness?
the degree to which one party attempts to satisfy the other party’s concerns
what is assertiveness?
the degree to which one party attempts to satisfy his/her own concerns
what are the five conflict handling styles?
forcing, problem solving, avoiding, yielding, compromising
what is forcing?
imposing one’s will on the other party (threats and bluffs, persuasive arguments, positional comments)
what is problem solving?
trying to reach an agreement that satisfies both party’s aspirations as much as possible (exchange info. about priorities and preferences, show insights, make trade-offs)
what is avoiding?
ignoring or minimizing the importance of the issues creating the conflict
what is yielding?
accepting and incorporating the will of the other party (unilateral concessions, unconditional promises, offer help)
what is compromising?
balancing concern for oneself with concern for the other party to reach a solution (match concessions, conditional promises/threats, find middle ground)
what are the three desired outcomes of conflict?
agreement, stronger relationships, learning
what is negotiation?
a process in which two or more parties exchange goods/services and attempt to agree upon the exchange rate for them
what are issues?
items that are specifically placed on the bargaining table for discussion
