They are a free form statement, narrative or essay.

It is a closed answer where you choose from a limited number of responses.

e.g. multiple choice.

They are closed answer where the respomses are a continnum.

e.g. fill in the blank.

It is a set of numerical values assigned to responses that represent the degree to which respondents possess a particular attitude, value or characterisitics.
