Chemical Analysis Flashcards
(9 cards)
What Is A Pure Substance?
Something that contains only one element or compound
What Is A Formulation?
A useful mixture
How Can You Test For Chlorine Gas?
Dampen litmus paper
The water dissolves some of the chlorine so it can react with the indicator on the litmus paper
How Can You Test For Oxygen?
Glowing splint test
Splint is lit and burnt for a few seconds and then blown out by breath or because it was shaken
How Can You Test For Hydrogen Gas?
Squeaky pop test
Place a lighted splint in a test tube with the gas
If hydrogen is present a squeaky pop will be heard
How Do You Carry Out Flame Tests?
Dip a clean wire loop into the compound being tested then put the loop into the edge of a blue flame of a Bunsen burner and observe the colour produced
What Are Some Disadvantages And Advantages Of Instrumental Analysis?
Accurate but expensive
How Does Flame Emission Spectroscopy Work?
The coloured light from a vaporised sample can be split to produce an emission spectroscope
Why Do Metal Ions Emit Light When In A Flame?
Electrons get excited and jump to a higher energy level and when they relax back down the excess energy gained is released in the form of light
