Flashcards in CHEMICAL REACTIONS Deck (16):
1

What is a chemical equation?

A chemical equation describes what happens in a chemical reaction.

2

What is the difference between a word and a formula equation?

A word equation is when you replace the reactants and products with their chemical names. A formula equation is when you replace the chemical names with their chemical formulas for example (CaCo3)

3

How do you balance chemical equations?

By having the same number of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation.

4

What is thermal decomposition?

It is when substances decompose at high temperatures. Sodium azide is a product of thermal decomposition that inflates air bags.

5

What are combination reactions?

When 2 reactants combine to form a single product. For example X + Y = XY. Another example is hydrochloric acid which is hydrogen gas + chlorine gas.

6

What are precipitation reactions?

A

7

How do scientists predict precipitation reactions?

By using a chart listed with all the solubility rules.

8

What is a oxidation reaction?

When a substance combines with oxygen during a chemical reaction.

9

How do you identify the state of an element?

S - solid
L - liquid
G - gas
AQ - aqueous solution

10

What is a reduction reaction?

When a compound loses oxygen atoms.

10

What is a reduction reaction?

When a compound loses oxygen atoms.

11

What are factors that affect the rate of reaction?

Temperature, concentration of the reactants, surface area, agitation and catalysts.

12

How does temperature change the rate of reaction?

When temperature is increased it normally increases the rate of reaction. The increase of the temperature increases the speed of the particles. Also increasing the temperature gives the particles more energy.

13

How does concentration change rate of reaction?

Increasing concentration of reactants will increase rate of reaction because the particles are more likely to collide and react when they are highly concentrated.

14

What are catalyst?

Catalysts are chemicals that speed up reactions but are not used up during the reaction.

15

What are enzymes?

Enzymes are biological catalysts. They hold reactant molecules together until they rearrange to form products.
