Flashcards in Chemistry 3 Deck (14):
1

What are the properties of Alkali/Group 1?

1 electron in outer shell
Soft and cut with knife
Conduct electricity
Melting point decreases down group 1

2

What happens when Group 1 react with water?

Sodium+Water--> Hydrogen+ Sodium Hydroxide

3

What happens when alkali metals react with chlorine?

A salet is produced
Sodium+Chlorine--> Sodium Chloride

4

What are the properties of transition metals?

Good heat conductors
Good electrical conductors
High Density
Strong and Hard
High Melting point
Coloured compounds
Catalysts

5

What are the properties of Halogens/Group 7?

Boiling and Melting points increase down the group

6

What is a displacement reaction?

The more reactive Halogen will displace the less reactive halogens.

7

What are the colours of the Halogen compounds?

Flourine- yellow
Chlorine- Green
Bromine- Brown
Iodine- Purple

8

What is Hard Water?

Hard water has ions of Magnesium and Chlorine

9

What is permenant hard water?

Ca+ ions are from Sulphate (SO4-2)

10

What is temporary hard water?

Ca+ ions are from Hydrgoencarbonates

11

How can water be softened?

Adding Sodium Carbonate Na2CO3 reacts with the ions.
Precipitate Forms

12

What is the ion exchange collumn?

Swaps sodium ions for calcium and magnesium ions.
Very Expensive
Used in heating

13

What happens when you boil hard water?

The hydrogencarbonate decomposes to form calcium carbonate.
