Flashcards in Chemistry Deck (27):
1

What is an atom

Its the smallest part of an element that can exist

2

What is an element

A substance that is made from only one atom type

3

What is a molecule

Two atoms joined together

4

What is a compound

Two or more elements chemically combined

5

What is group 8 called on periodic table

Noble gases

6

What is group 1 called on the periodic table

Alkali metals

7

What is the middle column called

Transition metals

8

What is the relative mass of protons, neutrons and electrons

Protons 1
Neutrons 1
Electrons 1/2000

9

What is the relative charge of protons, neutrons and electrons

Protons +1
Electrons -1
Neutrons 0

10

What is an isotope

Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons e.g hydrogen

11

Who invented the plum pudding model

Thomson

12

Who invented the nuclear model

Ernest rutherford

13

How are electrons arranged in the outer shell

The first layer has 2 then it is 8 consistently untill there is a remainder

14

What is an ion

A charged atom that has gained or lost an electron

15

Why does an atom gain or lose an electron

To have a full outer shell like noble gases

16

Who drew the first periodic table

Dimitri mendeleev

17

What is group 7 called on the periodic table

Halogens

18

How are ions held next to each other

Through strong electrostatic forces of attraction

19

How do you make ionic compounds

You find out the charge the two ions have and swap them around with each other

20

What are the benfits of nanoparticles

The materials behave differently on a tiny scale
The atoms and molecules are mostly found on the surface of the particle

21

What is the size of 1 nanometer

-9
1 x 10

22

Explain fractional distillation

It is ised for seperating liquids from a mixture they are seperated by boiling points when the mixture is heated the liquids evaporate differently

23

Explain simple distillation process

It is used for seperating the solvent from a solution e.g salt and water this is because salt has a lower boiling point when it is heated the water evaporates it gets cooled and condensed into different containers salt wont evaporate so it stays behind

24

Explain cystillisation process

It can mean a liquid changing to a solid the solution is warmed

25

What are nano particles smaller than

100 times smaller than dust

26

Hiw do materials behave differently

They behave differently on tiny scales

27

Where are the atoms and molecules located in nantechnology

On outer surface area
