"For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."

15

What do many Christians believe about humans' relationship with God before salvation?

The perfect relationship between God and man was broken by Adam and Eve, so humans are born with original sin and we have our own sins. Salvation is needed to restore the relationship and to have eternal life in heaven.

What do ALL Christians believe about salvation?

They believe that salvation brings God's grace.

17

Why is salvation important to Christians?

Salvation from sin was the purpose of Jesus coming to earth and founding Christianity.

Beliefs on life after death give life meaning and purpose.
Christians believe how they live and what they believe will affect what happens to them after death.
Christians believe that sins will stop them from getting to heaven so they avoid sins.

Evil and suffering takes 2 forms. What are they?

Moral suffering - suffering caused by humans eg rape or murder
Natural suffering - suffering caused by natural disasters

23

How does evil and suffering cause people to question or reject God?

A loving God wouldn't create a world with natural evils.
A loving God wouldn't allow humans to cause so much evil and suffering, and if he can stop it why wouldn't he?

24

How does evil and suffering cause problems for Christians?

If God is omnipotent, he would be able to remove evil and suffering from the world.
If God is omnibenevolent he must want to remove evil and suffering.
If God is omniscient he must have known the evil and suffering would happen from creating the universe.

The Book of Psalms explains that suffering is a part of life much like joy, and they both work side by side.

28

Name some theoretical responses to evil and suffering

The free will response is the idea that God created humans in his own image and therefore gave them free will, meaning they can choose good or evil and it is not God that causes the suffering.
The good out of evil response claims suffering can bring good out of people.
The no answer response claims that God has a reason for not ridding the world of suffering and evil but humans can't understand it.

29

Name some practical responses to evil and suffering

Christians may pray for those who suffer through intercessionary prayers.
Christians give practical help e.g become doctors or nurses or charity workers to reduce suffering in the world.
