"They are no longer two, but one flesh."
"What God has joined together, let no one separate."
"Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery."

2

What do Christians believe about marriage?

It should be between one man and one woman.
It is the only acceptable way to have a sexual relationship.
It is the way to start a family and have children.

3

What do humanists and atheists believe about marriage?

It is up to the people whether they marry or cohabit but relationships should be between 2 partners.

4

Name some changing attitudes about marriage

Sex before marriage is now accepted.
Lots of couples cohabit before they marry.
Divorce is now accepted.

5

What are the Christian responses to changing attitudes on marriage?

The response of Catholic and Conservative Christians is to condemn premarital sex, cohabitation and same-sex marriage.
The response of Liberal Christians is to accept the new attitudes, but encourage marriage if they wish to start a family.
Many Christians, especially young ones, ignore teachings and accept new attitudes.

6

Recite quotes for 1.2.2 Sexual Relationships
"Flee from ......... .............. All other sins a person commits are .......... ........ .........., but whoever sins sexually ........ ............. ......... ....... ........"
"Honour God with ....... ......."

"Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually sins against their own body."
"Honour God with your bodies."

7

What are the Christian teachings about sexual relationships outside of marriage?

Most Christians are opposed to pre-marital sex because it is condemned by the Catechism and the Bible.
All Christians are against adultery because it breaks the wedding vows and is condemned in the 10 commandments and by Jesus in the Gospels.

8

What are the Humanist and Atheist attitudes to sexual relationships?

They accept sex before marriage and cohabitation because they believe sexual relationships are a choice, although it should be between people of age, should not be cheating and must be consensual.

9

Recite quotes for 1.2.3 Families
"Children, ........ ......... .......... in the Lord, for this is right."
"Fathers, do not ............ ........ .............; instead, bring them up in the ............... and .................. of the Lord."

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right."
"Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."

10

What are the main family types?

Nuclear- mother, father and children living together as a unit
Single parent- children living with only one parent
Same sex parent- families headed by 2 men or 2 women
Extended families- three generations, living in the same house or in close proximity and having frequent contact and reliance on each other
Blended families- 2 separate families joined together by a parent from one family marrying a parent from another family

11

Why is family life important for Christians?

The purpose of Christian marriage is to have and bring up children in a secure environment so they will love God and follow Jesus.
The family is where children learn right and wrong.
It is where children are introduced to the faith.

12

Recite quotes for 1.2.4 Support for the family in the local parish
"Then people brought .......... ............. to Jesus for him to ......... ....... ......... ..... ....... and ........ ....... ........"
"Let the little children ......... .... ......., and ..... ....... ........... ......., for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

"Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them."
"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

13

What is the Parish?

An area around a local church that has a parish priest or a vicar.

14

Why do parishes try to help families?

They have a duty to help children baptised or dedicated in the church.
The church teaches that a main purpose of marriage is to have children and bring them up to love god and follow Jesus so it is the responsibility of the parish to help.
Christians believe family is the most important part of society and society would collapse without family so the parish helps parents with family life.

15

Why is support from the church important to Christian families?

Raising children as Christians means taking them to church regularly and that requires the church to be helpful to children.
Teaching children of Christianity requires knowledge and expertise that parents may not have so Church and Sunday schools provide that support.
For Catholic, Anglican and Orthodox families, taking part in the sacraments is essential and that requires the church.

16

Recite quotes for 1.2.5 Family Planning
"To render .............. impossible is ................ ........"

"To render procreation impossible is intrinsically evil."

17

What are artificial methods of contraception?

Methods that stop the sperm from meeting the egg, stop the woman from producing eggs, or stop the egg from staying in the womb. They can be used without much planning and in any sexula relationship e.g condoms, pill, diaphragm etc

18

What are natural methods of contraception?

Natural family planning (NFP) involves the reducing the woman's chance of becoming pregnant by planning sex around the most infertile times during her monthly cycle.

19

What are the Catholic attitudes to contraception?

They condemn the use of contraceptives as:
They separate the unitive and creative aspects of sex
Pope Paul VI stated the only contraceptives that are allowed are natural methods
Some contraceptives have abortifacient effects and so are against the church
Contraception is regarded as a major cause of sexual promiscuity, broken families, rise in divorce and STDs.

20

What do almost all Christians (except Catholics) say about contraception?

They believe all forms of contraception can be used because:
Christianity is about love and justice
Contraception improves women's health
The Bible does not condemn contraceptives
It is better to battle STDs by using condoms

21

What are the non religious attitudes to contraceptives?

Non religious people are in favour of all types of contraception as they say that contraception prevents unwanted children from being born so it improves the standard of living in families and also prevents STDs.

22

Recite quotes for 1.2.6 Divorce and Remarriage
"What God has joined together, ....... ......... ........ ........"
"Anyone who ............. ......... ......... and marries another ......... ............."
"To the married I give this command: A wife must not ............ ..... ........ ............ But if she does, she must remain ............. or else be ............. to her husband. And a husband must not ........ ........ ......."

"What God has joined together, let no one separate."
"Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery."
"To the married I give this command: A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife."

23

What do Catholics say about divorce?

The Catholic church doesn't allow divorce or remarriage. The only way a true marriage can end is through death. The Catholic church does allow civil divorce if it is better for the children, but they can't remarry.

24

What do non Catholic Christians say about divorce?

They allow divorce because:
Jesus allowed divorce in Matthew 19
If a marriage is broken then the divorce is less evil than the effects of the couple not divorcing
If Christians repent and confess their sins then they are forgiven, so a couple should have another chance of marriage if they are keen to make it work.

25

What do atheists believe about divorce?

Atheists view marriage as purely human, so they allow divorce, but some do not believe in marriage and so cohabit instead.

26

What do humanists believe about divorce?

Humanists believe all married couples should have the right to divorce but both spouses must be treated equally and as a single person thereafter and so can remarry.

27

Recite quotes for 1.2.7 Equality of Men and Women in the Family
"So God created man ...... ....... ....... ......., in the image of ........ ........ ......; male and female ...... ....... ......."
"Your desire will be for ........ .........., and he will ....... ........ ......."
"Submit yourselves to ....... ........ .........."
"Husbands ought to love their wives ....... ....... ....... ......."

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."
"Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you."
"Submit yourselves to your own husbands."
"Husbands ought to love their wives as their own body."

28

What does Genesis say about equality of men and women?

Gen 1 teaches equality of men and women as they were created at the same time and both in the image of God. Gen 2+3 says woman was made out of man's ribs and so the woman is subordinate to man. It also says that evil came into the world because woman persuaded man to eat the forbidden fruit and as a result, God allowed husbands to rule over their wives.

29

What do atheists believe about equality of men and women?

Atheists believe men and women are equal and have equal roles.

30

What do humanists believe about equality of men and women?

Humanists base beliefs on science so most humanists say they are equalists, so men and women should have equal roles. Many of the suffragettes and early feminists were humanists.

31

Recite quotes for 1.2.8 Gender Prejudice and Discrimination
"There is neither ...... ....... ..........., neither ....... ........ ........., nor is there ......... ...... ........, for you are all one in Jesus Christ."

"There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male or female, for you are all one in Jesus Christ."

32

What are the different attitudes to gender prejudice and discrimination?

Evangelicals say men and women have separate and different roles so can't have equal rights in religion
Catholics are against prejudice and discrimination and say men and women are equal, but only men can be ordained.
Liberals say men and women are completely equal.
