Q

“An offering for the sake of offering, perhaps. Anyhow it was her gift”

What’s the effect of using language like “perhaps” and “anyhow”?

A

After defending herself and her parties, she begins to question herself. Without the use of these words she would seem confident and sure of herself.

Q

“Making it up, building it round one, tumbling it, creating it every moment afresh”

A

Peter describes it as “that woman’s gift, of making a world of her own wherever she happened to be”

Also reflects the wave motif- give the impression of collecting and releasing

Represents the mind continuously honking and processing- Clarissa’s heightened senses (Woolf’s description of waves of impression “a shower of innumerable atoms”)

Q

“And she felt quite continuously a sense of their existence; and she felt what a waste; and she felt what a pity; and she felt if only they could be brought together”
What is this about?
Techniques?

A

This is Clarissa’s reasoning for her parties when having to defend them after peters criticisms
Polysyndetic Structure: repetition of ‘and’
Anaphora: repetition of the phrase “and she felt”
Gives the impression of a politicians speech defending and supporting their views. It’s as if she’s rehearsed the defence in her head.
