Cognitive Approach Evaluation Flashcards

1
Q

(+) Scientific methodology

A

The research methodology can be considered scientific. E.g the use of brain scan- the results of the brain scans are objective and unbiased, therefore increasing the internal validity. This improves the internal validity of the research conducted and therefore increases the internal validity of the cognitive approach as it is based on valid evidence.

Q

(+)Practical application

A

The approach has practical applications. Understanding the role of the cognitive processes in human experience and behaviour can help us to understand areas such as mental health, and then allows treatments to be developed. E.G. Cognitive behaviour therapy- talking therapy that looks at how thoughts affect feelings and behaviours. This is significant as it has allowed the theory to positively contribute to society, which as a result also highlights its explanatory power.

Q

(-) Reductionist

A

The cognitive approach might be considered reductionist. This can be considered a form of machine reductionism, comparison to machines does not allow for emotional and motivational factors ( mediational processes). This therefore may limit the explanatory power of the approach.

Q

(-) Undermimes the role of genetic factors

A

The cognitive approach undermines the role of genetic factors. Although aspects of the cognitive approach, such as cognitive neuroscience, account for the role of the brain, it failed to acknowledge that genetic factors can play a role in behaviour. E.G. in mental health disorders- doctors see signs that anxiety and depression are partly hereditary from studies of twins. this may suggest that the cognitive approach is an incomplete explanation of more complex human behaviour, such as mental health.
