What does the term “Cold War” refer to?
When there were high tensions between US and the USSR, and a struggle for world power
What countries were involved in the Cold War?
The US and the USSR
How did the Cold War start?
It started when both countries had weapons that they didn’t want to tell the other about
What was the Truman doctrine and what did it do?
It was a doctrine that stated that the US would help any country fight for freedom and liberty
What was containment?
It was when someone wanted to keep something or someone in the same place it was in, or smaller, not growing
What was being contained?
What did the Marshall plan do?
It gave millions to European countries to help rebuild after WWII.
How did the Marshall plan affect the countries?
They would hopefully be in favor of the West and their ideas and be against communism.
When was the United Nations established
What was the purpose of the UN
To maintain peace and settle disputes
Was the us a part of the UN?
What was nato?
It was a pact that included US, Canada and 10 western European countries
What was the goal/ purpose of NATO?
To have collective security, if one was attacked, the others would fight with them.
What was the Warsaw Pact?
It was a pact of Eastern European countries who also wanted collective security. If one was attacked, all would help
What was the Berlin airlift?
The US airlifted food and supplies to the people of West Berlin to help them.
Why did the Berlin airlift occur?
The Soviets blockaded West Berlin to try and shut out western nations from west Germany
What is the 38th parallel?
It is a line of longitude
Where can the 38th parallel be found?
In Korea, splitting the two countries
How did the Korean War start?
When North Korea invaded South Korea
What happened during the Korean War?
The N. Koreans pushed the UN and S. Koreans back and then were cut off by a plan MacArthur devised.
What aaa the outcome of the Korean War?
The line that separated the countries stayed the same
Who was Douglas MacArthur?
He was a general in charge of the UN troops in Korea.
What happened to MacArthur during the Korean War?
He pushed the n. Koreans almost out of Korea and then suggested that the us bomb China since they were communist. He was fired soon after that.
What was the HUAC?
They were in charge of investigating for communist organizations. They looked at Hollywood and the film industry
Who was Joesph McCarthy?
He was a senator
What did McCarthy do?
He suggested that a bunch of people were communist without and proof or evidence.
What is McCarthyism?
It’s when someone blames another without proof or evidence.
How did the us respond to McCarthyism?
They went crazy and were very paranoid.
What was the Cuban missle crisis?
When the USSR put missiles in Cuba as a response to the us putting missiles in turkey.
How was the Cuban missle crisis resolved?
Both countries took their missiles out of their respective countries.
Who were the beatniks?
They were the hipsters of 1950s
What ideas did the beatniks advance?
The idea of new music, new times. Had slang, critiqued social values and conformity and questioned the future

What things were Americans able to own for the first time?
What roles did women play in 1950s
The good housewife, some worked if needed
What expectations did society have for women of that time?
Keep house, watch kids, be happy, welcome husband home.
How did women feel about the expectations of the time
They didn’t like it, they didn’t have a voice.

Elvis Presley, rock and roll, leave it to beaver and other shows
