Conventions (David Lewis)
Patterns of beahvior people in a group follow when they face the same situations repeatedly.
- everyone follows a certain behavior
- everyone expects others to follow it too
- everyone prefers to follow it, because it helps solve a coordination problem
Social norms (Bicchieri)
People follow norms based on what they expect other to do and what they believe other expect of them.
Conditional preferences (Bicchieri)
- Emperical expectations: i expect enough others to follow the rule
- Normative expectation: i believe enough others expect me to follow the rule, preffer that i follow the rule, and may sanction me if i don’t
Theory of language games (Wittgenstein)
Just like in games, there are rules that guide how words are used, and these rules can change depending on the context.
Social norms (Winch)
Norms are a pattern of repeated behavior in a community which is maintained through the attitudes and responses of members of the community.
- Norms must be learnable
- It must be possible to make mistakes
