■ Encasement o the entire baby in a transparent parchment-like membrane (Fig. 4-12A), which impairs respiration and sucking.
■ Breaking and shedding o the collodion membrane initially leads to dif culties in thermoregulation and increased risk o in ection.
■ Skin is bright red and moist (Fig. 4-12A). A ter healing, skin appears normal or some time until signs o ichthyosisdevelop.
■ Collodion baby may be the initial presentation o lamellar ichthyosis or some less common orms o ichthyosis not discussed here.
■ Collodion baby also may be a condition that, a ter the collodion membrane is shed and the resultant erythemahascleared,willprogresstonormalskin ortheresto thechild’slie(Fig.4-12B).
■ Management: Keep the newborn in the incubator and monitor temperature, uids, and nutrient replacement.Aggressiveantibiotictherapy orskinandlunginection
