comparing prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Flashcards
1
Q
what is a prokaryotic cell.
A
prokaryotic cells have no nucleus and are a lot smaller that eukaryotic.
they also are generally unicellular such as bacteria.
2
Q
how are prokaryotic cells different to eukaryotic cells.
A
- they do not have membrane bound organelles.
- their ribosomes are smaller (70s)
- they have no nucleus
- they have a cell wall made of peptidoglycan
-contain plasmids, capsules and flagellum
3
Q
what is a plasmid?
A
small circular loops of DNA separate from the main DNA.
- they contain genes that are able to be passed between prokaryotes
4
Q
what is a capsule?
A
a final outer layer that protects bacteria from drying out and from attack by immune system cells.
5
